Zone Leader, City of Vancouver Neighbourhood Emergency Assistance Team

I volunteer with the City of Vancouver's Neighbourhood Emergency Assistance Team,so that, in the event of an earthquake or other major disaster, I'll be able to assist emergency responders (firefighters, police, or city staff) in safety and rescue operations. I'm one of six volunteer Zone Leaders in the City, which means I'll have a key leadership role in my neighbourhood in the event of a disaster.

This volunteer opportunity draws on a number of my skills, including:

  • prioritizing and accomplishing tasks effectively in high-stress situations;
  • anticipating and proactively working to prevent problems before they occur; and
  • communicating effectively and with empathy with individuals under stress.

Through NEAT, I've been trained in critical incident stress management, first aid and simple triage, and effective communication. I also am a Certified First Responder with the Red Cross and have completed Urban Search and Rescue training with the Canadian Armed Forces.
