I am leading the development and evaluation of five-day writing retreats for graduate students at UBC, a project funded through UBC's Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund.
In this short presentation, delivered as a part of the CIRCLe 2018 symposium at UBC, I called on instructors to be aware of the implications of asking their students to perform authenticity in searchable, accessible online spaces.
A year into our pilot project, the UBC Faculty of Arts ePortfolio team found that students who were creating online portfolios didn't have a strong conception of the range of people who might collect and present their accomplishments online. I created this video and had it animated as an introduction to the ePortfolio.
As a part of the UBC Faculty of Arts ePortfolio initiative, I interviewed students, alumni, and employers of new Arts graduates about their experiences with online portfolios. Because building a portfolio of work isn't a norm in many Arts disciplines--unlike, say, the disciplines of teaching or pharmacy--these videos were designed to help students see the value in collecting and presenting their work for a non-academic audience.
Working in Curriculum Development for the UBC Faculty of Arts ePortfolio Initiative, I help faculty members to integrate online portfolios into courses and programs, and coach students as they collect and curate their work for the web.
