Observational Beehive Project, Downtown Intercultural Gardeners’ Society (D.I.G.S.)

I drafted, coordinated, and won over $7,000 in funding for a project to build observational beehives--beehives with plexiglass walls--for my local community garden, the Downtown Intercultural Gardeners' Society (D.I.G.S.). I obtained funding from the City of Vancouver and the Vancouver Foundation for this project.

D.I.G.S. was founded as an inclusive comfortable space for people of different ages, cultural backgrounds, and first languages. Situated on the fourth-floor rooftop of St. Paul's Hospital in downtown Vancouver, D.I.G.S. has the added benefit of providing a therapeutic place of refuge and respite for patients, visitors, and hospital staff.

At D.I.G.S., we see our observational beehive project as building on this mission, providing a site of community interest while supporting the urban ecosystem and local food production. We expect to begin construction on our hives this summer, and anticipate bringing our first bee colonies to the garden in April 2019.
